The Shelf of Time

An interactive media-art prototype in which visitors light up a dark Chaekgado shelf. Clicking its three zones changes the lighting and effects; activating all three opens a door and leads into the next sequence.

The Shelf of Time · web version

Click the three zones to light them. When all three are lit, the door opens.

Challenge

A single click had to change the lighting and the state of the whole space, and carry that state into the next sequence.

My part

  • Mapped cursor position and clicks to three shelf-zone lighting states
  • Built per-zone fades for light intensity, emissive materials, and linked Niagara or particle effects
  • Set the door and camera sequence to start once all three zones are lit
  • Structured exhibition UI states for entry, pause, work information, and display settings

One click into the state of the room

Showing the zone under the cursor

I split the input into zone detection, state change, and visual output. A dim light and hint identify the zone under the cursor before a click.

Target intensity and fade per zone

Hover previews and confirmed clicks use different target intensities. Each click sets target intensities and fades for its lights, emissive materials, and linked effects.

All three lit, the door opens

The three-zone completion state is managed separately. It triggers the door and camera sequence, while the UI coordinates entry, pause, and restart.

Result

Created a personal prototype linking entry, per-zone response, and completion sequencing in one state flow.
